Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) Makes History with AI-Powered News Broadcast

In a groundbreaking move, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) recently introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to its 8 p.m. news broadcast. The veteran newscasters Chaminda Gunaratne and Nishadi Bandaranaike delivered the day’s updates in their characteristic style, but reports claimed that AI technology was behind the presentation.

This technological revolution marks a significant advancement in Sri Lankan electronic media, receiving warm and positive responses. News Producer Gamini Bandara Manikdiwela emphasized the challenge of incorporating the Sinhalese language in AI, as any errors would be noticeable to the audience.

Manikdiwela revealed that the SLRC had previously used AI for a program on Avurudu Nakath successfully. This AI-powered news broadcast is a pioneering achievement globally, as regular news anchors were recreated using AI for the first time.

The use of Sinhala language in AI technology is a crucial aspect, with Image AI Generation, Video AI Generation, and Audio AI Generation techniques employed. Manikdiwela credited his knowledge from a scholarship program in Dubai and expressed gratitude to SLRC officials for the opportunity.

SLRC Chairperson Dr. Prasad Samarasinghe highlighted the importance of AI in the country’s development and youth uplift. He emphasized the need for careful use of AI technology for the betterment of humankind, as it is the future alongside Machine Learning, Robotics, and Automation.

The SLRC’s AI quest aligns with President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s plans for AI usage in the country, aiming for tech-savvy youth to create AI software for foreign exchange. The organization hopes to share insights into AI technology and collaborate with other channels for a brighter future in media technology.
