Russia alleges that the US is plotting to deploy weapons in space

Russia has accused the United States of attempting to deploy weapons in space, sparking a new escalation in their ongoing dispute. This accusation came after Washington blocked a Russian non-proliferation proposal at the United Nations, further straining relations between the two superpowers.

The UN Security Council rejected the Russian proposal aimed at addressing military activities in space, with skepticism from other countries about Moscow’s intentions following its veto of an American resolution in April regarding nuclear proliferation in outer space.

Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the US, stating, “They have once again demonstrated that their true priorities in the area of outer space are aimed not at keeping space free from weapons of any kind, but at placing weapons in space and turning it into an arena for military confrontation.”

The ongoing accusations between the two countries have intensified in recent months, with both sides accusing each other of attempting to militarize space. In February, Washington expressed concerns about Russia’s development of “anti-satellite capability,” while Moscow dismissed these accusations as “malicious” and “unfounded.”

Despite the strained relations and ongoing disputes, space remains a rare area of cooperation between the US and Russia. Both countries continue to transport each other’s crew members to and from the International Space Station, where their astronauts work together.

As the tensions in space continue to rise, the international community is closely watching the developments between the two superpowers and the implications it may have on the future of space exploration and security.
