Russian forces have seized control of the settlement of Bohdanivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, according to a statement from Russia’s defense ministry on Sunday. The capture of Bohdanivka, located just west of the Russian-held city of Bakhmut, has been a point of contention for some time.
The General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian forces successfully repelled 13 enemy attacks in Bohdanivka, among other villages, in their Sunday evening update. However, the specifics of these attacks were not provided.
While Ukraine’s Defense Ministry previously denied that Russia had taken full control of Bohdanivka, unofficial sources suggest otherwise based on video evidence of the village and the nearby town of Chasiv Yar. Ukrainian forces are now focusing on defending Chasiv Yar, which is seen as a crucial barrier to prevent Russian advancement towards the cities of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.
Maksym Zhorin, a commander on the frontline in the area, confirmed on national television that Ukrainian forces maintain full control over positions around Chasiv Yar. Bakhmut, which fell to Russian troops in May 2023 after intense fighting, serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict in the region.
The situation in Bohdanivka underscores the ongoing tensions and violence in eastern Ukraine, as both sides continue to vie for control over strategic territories. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with implications for the region and beyond.
