In a shocking turn of events, Russia has accused Ukraine of launching a drone attack on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is under Moscow’s control. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for restraint in the midst of escalating tensions.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest in Europe, has been occupied by Russian forces since the beginning of the 2022 Ukraine offensive. The management of the plant, controlled by Moscow, confirmed on social media that the Ukrainian Armed Forces targeted the dome of the sixth power unit of the plant. Fortunately, there was no radioactive release as a result of the attack.

The IAEA was informed by the Russian-installed management that a drone had detonated on site. Director Rafael Grossi urged all parties to avoid actions that could compromise nuclear safety. Russia’s nuclear agency ROSATOM condemned the attack and called on the West and Grossi to denounce the escalation around the plant.

According to reports, the drone struck the plant’s canteen, injuring three staff members, one of them severely. Despite the incident, there was no critical damage or change in radiation levels at the station or its surroundings.

The situation remains tense as both Russia and Ukraine exchange accusations and the international community watches closely for any further developments.
