Russia declares direct confrontation with NATO in Ukraine conflict as Macron dismisses Moscow’s attack claims as ‘ridiculous’

In a series of tragic events today, civilians in Ukraine and Russia have been caught in the crossfire of escalating tensions. In Kharkiv, a “double tap” Russian attack claimed the lives of three first responders and a civilian in the early hours, a brutal tactic that targets emergency responders attending to victims. Additionally, a 36-year-old man was killed in a separate shelling attack in the region later in the day.

On the other side, Russian-installed officials have claimed that six civilians were killed in Ukrainian attacks on Russian-occupied parts of southern and eastern Ukraine. These incidents highlight the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians caught in the middle.

Meanwhile, NATO has denied being in direct confrontation with Russia, despite Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov’s assertion that relations have reached that level. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized that the alliance is not a party to the conflict and has no plans to deploy combat troops in Ukraine.

In a show of support for Ukraine, Stoltenberg and key NATO allies discussed the need for air defense missiles but did not provide concrete plans or commitments. The French president also condemned Moscow’s comments on a recent terror attack as “ridiculous” and “threatening,” further underscoring the strained relations between Russia and Western powers.

Lastly, Finland announced the extension of its border closure with Russia and added more ports to the list of prohibited travel destinations. The move comes as Finland, a recent NATO member, aims to secure its borders amidst a surge in migrant crossings from Russia.
