Russia initiates extensive assault on Ukrainian energy facilities

In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s air force reported downing dozens of Russian missiles and drones in an overnight attack on Ukrainian energy facilities. The barrage targeted key infrastructure, triggering blackouts and electricity rationing across the country.

According to the air force, 76 Russian air attacks were launched, including 55 missiles and 21 drones. Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted 39 missiles and 20 drones, but not without casualties. An eight-year-old child was wounded in the central Kirovograd region, while falling debris injured two others near Kyiv.

The capital city of Kyiv was put on high alert as Russian forces launched several cruise missiles, with rockets entering the city from different directions. The local administration confirmed that all air targets in the area were destroyed, but the threat to Ukrainian energy facilities remains.

This recent attack marks the fifth assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in a month and a half, with at least three thermal power plants seriously damaged. The city of Kharkiv, near the Russian border, faced power restrictions affecting around 200,000 households. Kherson, which Ukraine reclaimed in November 2022, was also targeted, leaving parts of the city without electricity and damaging the railway infrastructure.

As tensions escalate, Ukraine accuses Russia of intensifying attacks ahead of nationwide celebrations on May 9 and the anticipated arrival of crucial weapons supplies from the United States. The conflict shows no signs of abating, with both sides continuing to engage in a deadly struggle for control.
