Russia launches offensive on Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, unleashing a barrage of attacks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Russia launched a surprise ground offensive into Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, pummelling over 30 towns and villages, causing the evacuation of nearly 6,000 people. The Ukrainian army admitted that Russia was achieving tactical success after the assault, which included artillery and mortar attacks in border villages like Lyptsi and the town of Vovchansk.

The situation in Kharkiv is described as complex and dynamically changing, with Russian troops mounting assaults in various areas. The regional governor reported that more than 30 towns and villages were struck by enemy attacks, resulting in at least nine injuries. Russian aircraft also bombed some areas, leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents.

Meanwhile, Ukraine retaliated by launching drone strikes on western Russia, targeting an oil terminal and an electrical substation. The conflict has also resulted in casualties on both sides, with one woman killed in Russia and three people killed in Ukraine.

In a surprising move, Russian President Vladimir Putin replaced defense minister Sergei Shoigu with economist Andrey Belousov, signaling a major shake-up in Russia’s military leadership. Despite facing setbacks in the Ukraine offensive, Putin emphasized the need for innovation in the defense ministry to stay competitive on the battlefield.

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to escalate, with ongoing attacks and counterattacks in various border regions. The international community closely watches the developments as the situation remains volatile and unpredictable.
