Russia and Uzbekistan have announced plans to build Central Asia’s first nuclear power plant, marking a significant milestone in the region’s energy sector. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev revealed the groundbreaking project during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the historic nature of the collaboration.

The nuclear deal signifies Russia’s ability to export advanced technology to new markets in Asia, amid increasing pressure from Western sanctions. The project, led by Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom, will see the construction of up to six nuclear reactors in Uzbekistan, with a capacity of 55 megawatts each.

This initiative comes as Uzbekistan looks to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on traditional oil and gas imports. The country, along with neighboring Kazakhstan, has long expressed the need for nuclear power to support its growing economy.

In addition to the nuclear project, Uzbekistan is also exploring opportunities to increase its imports of Russian oil and gas. The two countries are working on various large-scale projects in mining, metals, and chemicals, further strengthening their strategic partnership.

Despite maintaining close ties with Moscow, Uzbekistan, like other Central Asian nations, has refrained from openly supporting Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. Instead, the region is collaborating with the West on alternative trade routes to bypass Russia.

The construction of the nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan represents a significant step towards enhancing energy security and sustainable development in the region. As the project progresses, it is expected to further solidify the strategic alliance between Russia and Uzbekistan, ushering in a new era of cooperation in the energy sector.
