Russian Deputy Defence Minister Faces Bribery Charges in Court

Former Russian deputy defence minister Timur Ivanov is facing serious allegations of corruption after being accused of accepting a massive bribe. Ivanov, who held a high-ranking position in the Russian military, was arrested on Tuesday and appeared in court in central Moscow on Wednesday morning.

According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, Ivanov is suspected of taking an especially large bribe, a criminal offense that could result in up to 15 years in prison. The court has ordered him to remain in pre-trial custody, along with an acquaintance named Sergei Borodin, who is facing similar charges.

Investigators revealed that Ivanov allegedly conspired with third parties to receive a bribe in the form of unspecified property services related to contracting and subcontracting work for the Ministry of Defence. Ivanov was appointed to his position in 2016 and was responsible for overseeing various aspects of military operations, including property management and construction projects.

The timing of Ivanov’s arrest is significant, as it comes amidst Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Reports suggest that Ivanov was involved in construction projects in Mariupol, a city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region that has been heavily impacted by the conflict.

Critics, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s team, have long accused Ivanov of living a lavish lifestyle and engaging in corrupt practices. Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index ranks Russia poorly in terms of corruption, highlighting the challenges the country faces in combating such practices.
