Russia’s new strategy of targeting power stations leaves Ukraine severely weakened

In a recent development, a top advisor of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed the devastating impact of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, particularly targeting power stations. Mykhailo Podolyak stated that Russia has adopted a new strategy of launching coordinated missile strikes on multiple power stations simultaneously, overwhelming the country’s air defense systems.

The latest attack took place on a coal and gas-fired power plant in the south of Kyiv, causing a fire in the turbine hall and resulting in a complete loss of power generation capacity. While no casualties were reported, the destruction was described as “terrifying” by the plant’s operator, Centrenergo. This is not the first time the company has been targeted, as another power station near Kharkiv was bombed by Russia a few weeks ago.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin justified the attacks as a response to Ukraine’s alleged strikes on Russian oil refineries. He claimed that the goal of the attacks is to demilitarize Ukraine, with the timing chosen for the spring season out of “humanitarian considerations.” However, the relentless targeting of energy infrastructure has led to severe power cuts in cities like Kharkiv, with 200,000 homes reported to be without electricity.
