Rutland couple looks back on their thrilling Race Across The World journey

A retired couple from Rutland, Stephen and Viv Redding, recently took on the challenge of competing in this year’s series of the BBC TV show Race Across The World. The couple, who were the oldest team in the competition, embarked on a gruelling journey from Japan to Indonesia, covering a distance of 9,320 miles without the use of flights, smartphones, or credit cards.

Describing themselves as very competitive, Stephen and Viv aimed to win the challenge in order to take home a cash prize. The couple, who are active and enjoy sports and dance classes, saw the race as a “big adventure” and a chance to prove themselves.

Despite feeling prepared due to their active lifestyle and having watched previous seasons of the show, the Reddings found the experience to be far more challenging than they had anticipated. Mrs. Redding, 65, applied for the show to break away from stereotypes of older individuals and to showcase their adventurous spirit.

Mr. Redding, 61, highlighted the constant alertness required during the race, as they navigated unfamiliar territories with limited information. While winning was a goal, the couple emphasized that completing the race was the ultimate achievement for them.

The Reddings’ journey on Race Across The World not only tested their physical endurance but also showcased their determination and spirit of adventure. Their story serves as an inspiration for viewers of all ages to embrace challenges and seek out new experiences.
