Rwandan entrepreneur’s mission to support women in the local fashion sector

Chantal Murebwa’s journey from a small workshop with just one sewing machine to a thriving garment factory, New Kigali Designers and Outfitters, is a true testament to perseverance and dedication. Located near the Kigali Genocide Memorial, the factory now employs 280 workers, with over 80% of them being women.

Starting in 1995, in the aftermath of the devastating 1994 Genocide, Murebwa’s passion for fashion and women’s empowerment led her to establish her own company. Over the years, she has faced challenges and seized opportunities, eventually expanding her workshop into a full-fledged factory.

With support from financial institutions and development agencies, Murebwa’s factory has grown exponentially, contributing to the Made in Rwanda campaign and providing employment opportunities for women across the country. The impact of her work is evident in the success stories of women like Marie Mukasekuru, who have been able to transform their lives through the skills they acquired at the factory.

Despite facing challenges such as access to finance and skilled manpower, Murebwa remains determined to grow her business and reach new markets. The upcoming expansion of her factory at the Kigali Special Economic Zone is a testament to her vision for the future.
