Maui High School’s baseball team secured a crucial victory over Kamehameha Maui, winning 5-1 and clinching the MIL D-I regular-season title. The win marked a significant milestone for the Sabers, who haven’t won the championship since 2008.
Junior left-hander Izaiah Koko delivered a stellar performance on the mound, pitching a three-hit complete game with four strikeouts. The Sabers capitalized on the erratic pitching of Kamehameha Maui, who hit eight Maui High batters with pitches throughout the game.
The victory was especially sweet for Maui High after a disappointing finish to the previous season, where they missed out on the state tournament. Koko expressed his determination to make the most of every opportunity on the field.
With the regular-season title secured, Maui High will enter the MIL D-I tournament as the top seed. The team can claim the overall title with two wins in the tournament or in a championship playoff game if needed.
Coach Chase Corniel emphasized the team’s focus on their ultimate goal of winning the overall title, acknowledging the tough competition ahead in the tournament. Kamehameha Maui coach Shane Dudoit praised the Sabers for their tenacity and skill on the field.
Maui High’s victory was highlighted by key plays from players like Ekolu Arai, Nariyuki Dumlao, and Russell Villanueva, who contributed to the team’s success. The Sabers’ strong performance sets the stage for an exciting and competitive tournament ahead.
