SAFEEN Group to introduce the first electric tug in the Middle East

SAFEEN Group, a maritime services provider and part of the UAE-based AD Ports Group, has made history by signing an agreement with Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards for the lease and purchase of the first all-electric tug in the Middle East. This groundbreaking move marks a significant step towards sustainable maritime operations in the region.

The Damen RSD-E Tug 2513, unveiled during the 27th International Tug & Salvage Convention, Exhibition & Awards 2024 in Dubai, is set to join AD Ports Group’s Marine Services fleet at Khalifa Port. This all-electric harbor tug is expected to revolutionize the industry with its zero emissions from “Tank to Propeller” feature, operational efficiency boasting a 70-ton bollard pull, and cost-effectiveness due to lower maintenance costs compared to traditional diesel-powered tugs.

Initially, the tug will be operated via generators that comply with the latest emission regulations, making it more fuel-efficient compared to its diesel counterparts. This trial initiative is expected to pave the way for a formalized electrification strategy for the marine services fleet, showcasing SAFEEN Group’s commitment to sustainability.

Plans also include the development of a shore facility at Khalifa Port capable of delivering 1.5 MW of power for charging, demonstrating AD Ports Group’s dedication to supporting electric-powered vessels and sustainable infrastructure. With a shore charging facility in place, the tug will benefit from its full electric capabilities, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of maritime activities.

Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO of the Maritime & Shipping Cluster at AD Ports Group, expressed pride in welcoming the first electric tug in the Middle East to their fleet, emphasizing the company’s commitment to greener maritime operations. Kommer Damen, Chairman of Damen Shipyards Group, also highlighted the vessel’s innovative design and contribution to environmental sustainability, noting its recognition as the ‘Tug of the Year’ at the 2022 International Tug & Salvage Awards.

Furthermore, Damen recently launched a fully electric tug of the same type for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, showcasing the growing trend towards electrification in the maritime industry. The vessel, VOLTA 1, is capable of performing multiple towage operations on a single charge and can be fully recharged in just two hours.

In addition, the all-electric RSD-E Tug 2513 named Sparky is already deployed in New Zealand’s Ports of Auckland, supporting the port’s goal to achieve emissions-free operations by 2040. Launched in August 2022, this tug has set a new standard for environmentally friendly maritime practices in the region.
