Salem Girls Track Team Dominates District Meet

The Salem girls track team got off to a strong start at the Salem Division II district meet, aiming for their third consecutive district team title. The team showcased their talent by securing three district champions on the first day of the competition.

The Quakers’ dominance was evident as they clinched victories in the 3200-meter relay, shot put, and high jump events. Senior Kaylee Carlisle triumphed in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet 11 inches, while freshman Maddie Gorby soared to victory in the high jump, clearing 5 feet.

However, the highlight of the day was the Salem girls’ 3200-meter relay team, consisting of seniors Megan Stafford and Rylee Hutton, and juniors Maggie Hopple and Maggie Hall. The quartet blazed past their competitors, securing their third consecutive district title with a time of 9 minutes and 45.99 seconds.

With these impressive performances, Salem currently leads the girls’ standings with 35 points, closely followed by Fairless with 28 1/2 points. The top four finishers in each event will advance to the Austintown Fitch regional meet on May 23 and 25.

The Salem boys also had notable achievements, with two long jumpers advancing to the regional meet. Junior Marcus Phillips placed third with a jump of 20 feet 5 3/4 inches, while sophomore Lucas Adams secured fourth place with a personal-best jump of 20 feet 2 inches.

The district meet will conclude on Saturday with the remaining field events and running finals. The Salem girls’ team’s stellar performance sets the stage for an exciting regional competition as they continue their quest for another championship title.
