Samsung Medison, a medical device unit of Samsung Electronics, has announced its plans to acquire Sonio, a Paris-based startup specializing in AI-powered software for ultrasound workflows, for approximately $92.7 million. Sonio’s AI assistant is designed to assist obstetricians and gynecologists in evaluating and documenting ultrasound exams, with its Sonio Detect product even receiving regulatory clearance in the United States.
This acquisition will allow Samsung Medison to enhance its AI-driven imaging workflows and bring innovative technology to the market. Despite the acquisition, Sonio will remain an independent company and continue to operate in France, offering its products and services.
Founded in 2020 by Cecile Brosset and Remi Besson, Sonio recently secured $14 million in a Series A funding round led by Cross Border Impact Ventures. With a total of $27.2 million raised so far, Sonio has garnered support from investors such as Elaia, Bpifrance French Tech Seed, and OneRagtime.
Yong Kwan Kim, CEO of Samsung Medison, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Through the acquisition of Sonio, Samsung Medison will continue to deliver upon our promise to improve the quality of people’s lives with technology.” Cecile Brosset, CEO of Sonio, also shared her enthusiasm, highlighting the growth opportunities that lie ahead for both companies.
This strategic partnership between Samsung Medison and Sonio is set to revolutionize the prenatal ultrasound exam process, offering advanced AI technology and reporting capabilities to enhance medical reporting technology and diagnostic software globally.
