Samsung Next, the venture capital arm of Samsung Electronics, has announced a strategic investment in Seattle-based startup Expanso. Expanso specializes in distributed data processing, a crucial aspect for handling the vast amount of data generated by globally distributed workloads.

The collaboration between Samsung Next and Expanso aims to streamline data processing for Samsung, while also providing Expanso with the opportunity for growth and expansion. Expanso’s CEO, David Aronchick, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the importance of addressing data challenges in today’s digital landscape.

Expanso offers a decentralized approach to data processing through its open-source platform, Bacalhau. This platform allows enterprises to process data where it is generated, whether on the cloud or on the edge, reducing the need for complex ETL pipelines and centralization.

With Samsung Next’s backing, Expanso’s Bacalhau is expected to support Samsung’s global distributed workloads, spanning from mobile devices to heavy industrial deployments. The partnership comes at a crucial time as the industry witnesses a surge in data generation due to emerging technologies like generative AI and 5G networks.

Andy Duong, an investor at Samsung Next, highlighted the potential applications of Bacalhau, including video processing on edge devices and sharing large datasets between organizations. The collaboration is expected to drive new applications in real-time data analysis, resource utilization, and data privacy control.

Since the launch of Bacalhau, Expanso has seen significant growth, with over 2 million jobs run across various use cases. The platform has been adopted by clients such as the U.S. Navy, University of Maryland, Prelinger Labs, and WeatherXM. Moving forward, Expanso plans to focus on enhancing its platform to cater to a wider range of use cases and simplify the adoption of distributed computing architectures.
