Samsung Regains Top Spot as Leading Phone Manufacturer, Surpassing Apple

Samsung has reclaimed its throne as the top-selling smartphone maker in the world, according to data released by market intelligence firm IDC. The tech giant shipped out 60.1 million Galaxy phones from January through March, capturing 20.8% of the global smartphone market. This marks a significant comeback for Samsung, which held the top spot for 12 years until Apple surpassed it at the end of 2023.

The resurgence of Samsung can be attributed to the success of its latest release, the Samsung Galaxy S24. The new smartphone reportedly outperforms the iPhone 15 in 5G performance and boasts AI-powered features such as photo editing and real-time translation. In contrast, Apple’s iPhone shipments were down nearly 10% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2024.

While Samsung and Apple continue to dominate the high-end market, Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi and Transsion have also made significant gains, taking third and fourth place in global smartphone sales. IDC predicts that Huawei’s resurgence in China, along with the growth of other Chinese brands like Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo, will push Samsung and Apple to explore new opportunities for expansion and diversification.

As the competition heats up in the smartphone market, consumers can expect to see more innovative features and technologies from leading manufacturers like Samsung and Apple.
