The SanCap Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the grand openings of two new restaurants on Sanibel Island, bringing a fresh wave of excitement to the island’s dining scene. The Original Cheeburger Cheeburger and Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant were welcomed with ribbon-cutting ceremonies on April 11, marking the official start of their culinary journeys.

The Original Cheeburger Cheeburger, known for its iconic cheeseburgers and milkshakes, underwent a complete facelift and menu revamp. The new owners, who acquired the business just before Hurricane Ian hit, have introduced new items like chicken tacos and shrimp and grouper dishes, all made with 100% fresh Angus beef. General Manager Sithembile Khumalo highlighted the addition of a sports bar and unique retro decorations, including a ’59 Corvette and ’58 Indian Chief motorcycle, creating a vibrant and entertaining atmosphere for diners.

On the other hand, Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant combines the best elements of former island favorites, The Mad Hatter and The Island Cow. Co-owner Bridgit Kolshak described Wickies as a blend of upscale menu items and a relaxed beachy vibe, offering a unique dining experience for visitors and locals alike. The restaurant also houses The Magic Bus Ice Cream & Caffeine next door, providing guests with a one-stop shop for delicious food and desserts.

Both restaurants have received positive feedback from the community, with locals and tourists eagerly anticipating their reopening. The chamber’s President and CEO, John Lai, expressed his delight at the revitalization of Sanibel’s east end as a foodie destination, thanks to the innovative concepts brought to life by these savvy restaurateurs. The island’s dining scene is once again thriving, offering a diverse range of culinary experiences for all to enjoy.
