Sarah Elfreth, the youngest female State Senator in Maryland, emerges victorious in House Primary

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sarah Elfreth, the youngest woman ever elected to Maryland’s State Senate, secured a major victory in the crowded Democratic primary race for Maryland’s Third Congressional District. The 35-year-old emerged victorious from a field of over 20 Democrats, positioning herself to succeed Representative John Sarbanes, who opted not to seek re-election after nine terms.

Having been first elected to the Maryland State Senate in 2018, Elfreth emphasized her political experience and bipartisan accomplishments during her campaign. She ran on a platform that included commitments to protect abortion rights, address gun violence, and combat climate change, aligning with standard Democratic priorities.

Elfreth garnered support from local Democrats, with Senator Ben Cardin speaking positively of her on the campaign trail. Her main rival, Harry Dunn, a former Capitol Police officer known for his testimony in the House investigation into the January 6th attacks, had raised significantly more funds than Elfreth. Despite this, Elfreth received backing from outside groups, including a substantial amount from the United Democracy Project.

The race saw tensions between the candidates, with Dunn criticizing Elfreth for her bipartisan voting record and outside support. Elfreth, in turn, pledged to prioritize campaign finance reform in Congress and accused Dunn of misrepresenting her record.

With the heavily Democratic district likely to favor Elfreth in the upcoming November election, all eyes are on the young politician as she prepares to make history once again.
