The WTA Finals, the prestigious season-ending event of the women’s tennis tour, will be held in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh from 2024 to 2026. The confirmation of this decision comes after months of speculation surrounding the nation’s involvement in tennis. The prize money for the 2024 tournament has been significantly increased to $15.25 million, a 70% raise from the previous year.

Riyadh will play host to the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams from November 2-9, with the event set to continue in the city for the following two years as well. This move marks a significant investment by Saudi Arabia in tennis and various sports, despite concerns raised by tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova regarding LGBTQ+ and women’s rights in the country.

WTA Tour Chairman and CEO Steve Simon addressed these concerns, stating that the organization is aware of the differing views on Saudi Arabia’s investment in sports. He emphasized the global nature of the tour, with players from over 90 nations participating in events across various cultures and value systems.

The decision to hold the WTA Finals in Riyadh reflects the growing impact of the sports industry in the region. Saudi Arabia has been actively involved in sports, with investments in golf, soccer, and now tennis. The ATP Tour has also moved its Next Gen Finals to Jeddah, showcasing the country’s increasing role in the sporting world.

Despite ongoing discussions about social reforms and human rights issues in Saudi Arabia, the WTA Finals in Riyadh are set to provide a platform for top women’s tennis players to compete for increased prize money and global exposure.
