After 28 years of dedicated service at the Hendersonville Times-News, Dean Hensley, the news editor, is bidding farewell to the newspaper on May 17. Hired at the age of 25 by executive editor Joy Franklin, Dean’s journey at the paper has been nothing short of remarkable.
Dean’s career at the Times-News began in 1994 when he did an internship during his senior year at UNC Asheville. Despite initial doubts about getting into the newspaper business, Dean’s perseverance paid off when he was offered a part-time weekend news reporter position in 1996. Over the years, he transitioned from news clerk to sports reporter, eventually becoming the sports editor in 2006.
Throughout his tenure, Dean has covered a wide range of stories, from high school sports to NASCAR races, and has met numerous sports celebrities along the way. He has been a beloved figure in the newsroom, working alongside a dedicated team of journalists and editors who have supported him like family.
As Dean embarks on a new career outside of print media, he reflects on the cherished memories and experiences he has had at the Times-News. He expresses gratitude to his colleagues, readers, and supporters who have been a part of his journey.
In his farewell message, Dean quotes Saturday Night Live’s Dennis Miller, saying, “Guess what, folks? That’s the news, and I am outta here.” His departure marks the end of an era at the Hendersonville Times-News, but his legacy and impact on the community will be remembered for years to come.
