Scammer Exposed as ‘Real-Life Talented Mr. Ripley’ for Using $1.1 Million to Fund Lavish Lifestyle of Fast Cars, 12,000sqf Home, and Piloting Hobby

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Joey Cipolla, a 40-year-old scammer, has been living a life of luxury at the expense of others, conning people out of thousands of dollars and even stealing $1.1 million in COVID relief funds. His lavish lifestyle included driving a Lamborghini and Bentley, owning a Cessna plane, and gambling thousands of dollars at casinos. However, his fraudulent activities have finally caught up with him as he faces prison time for his crimes.

Cipolla’s criminal history is extensive, with 15 convictions in four states for various offenses, including writing bad checks to buy vehicles. Despite serving time in Illinois and Michigan, he continued his fraudulent activities upon his release. He used his schemes to apply for over $1.35 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans, which were meant to help struggling businesses during the pandemic.

Prosecutors have been relentless in their pursuit of justice for Cipolla’s victims, pushing for a 10-year prison sentence. They argue that Cipolla’s actions were fueled by greed and that there is no reason to believe he will change his fraudulent ways if released. On the other hand, Cipolla’s defense is advocating for a seven-year sentence, claiming that he has shown remorse and a desire to turn his life around.

One of Cipolla’s victims, Dion Antic, likened him to the character Tom Ripley from the movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” highlighting the extent of Cipolla’s deception. Antic even started a Facebook group called ‘Conned by Joey Cipolla,’ where over 100 followers share their experiences and seek justice for the crimes committed against them.

Despite his attempts to evade law enforcement, Cipolla was eventually apprehended and is currently being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago. In a letter to the court, Cipolla expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the harm he caused to his victims and apologizing for his selfish behavior.

As the case unfolds, Cipolla’s fate hangs in the balance, with both prosecutors and his defense making their cases for an appropriate sentence. The community of victims he defrauded continues to seek closure and justice for the financial losses they suffered at the hands of this notorious conman. The saga of Joey Cipolla serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of greed and deception, reminding us of the importance of accountability and integrity in all aspects of life.
