Essentia Health is making it easier for student-athletes in Minnesota and Wisconsin to get their sports physicals done with their latest initiative. The health care provider is offering sports physicals for student-athletes ranging from middle school to college across both states.

In Minnesota, sports physicals are valid for three years and are a requirement for student-athletes before they can start a new sport or competitive season. These physicals, also known as preparticipation physical evaluations, help determine if it’s safe for a child to participate in a specific sport.

Parents are encouraged to schedule their child’s physical at least six weeks before the sports season begins to allow for any necessary follow-up. Forms for the physicals can be found online at mshsl.org and should be completed and signed before the appointment.

During the sports physical, parents will learn about the safety of their child participating in a sport, how to prevent injuries, and how to manage playing with a medical condition or chronic illness. Dr. Jonathan KenKnight, an Essentia pediatrician, emphasized the importance of sports physicals for young athletes, ensuring they are fit and safe for the game.

Overall, these sports physicals not only keep student-athletes ready for action on the field but also contribute to their overall health and well-being. Essentia Health is welcoming non-patients to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of keeping young athletes healthy and safe.
