Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro is gearing up to celebrate American music with their upcoming performance, “An American Portrait,” this weekend. The concert will feature works by renowned composers such as Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Charles Ives, and more, showcasing the rich tapestry of American musical heritage.

Under the direction of Adam C. Phillips, the choir is eager to connect with their audience through familiar folk songs and spirituals. Phillips, who took on the role of artistic director last September, aims to appeal to the community by delving into the history and essence of American music.

One of the highlights of the program is a challenging piece by Charles Ives, where the men and women of the choir sing in different keys, creating a unique and complex harmony. Despite the difficulty, the singers have risen to the occasion, impressing Phillips during rehearsals.

Judy Mosedale, the president of Schola Cantorum, shared that the ensemble has regained its pre-pandemic membership of 50 singers, with a mix of seasoned professionals and enthusiastic newcomers. The supportive environment within the choir fosters a sense of camaraderie and energy among members.

The concert will feature a diverse range of musical styles, from lighthearted folk songs to poignant spirituals, offering something for every listener. As the choir aims to bring people together through music, the performance promises to be a memorable and uplifting experience for all in attendance.
