Schommer siblings excel at University of Mary in academics, athletics, and career opportunities

Two siblings from New Ulm Cathedral are making waves at the University of Mary in North Dakota, excelling in baseball and softball. Mark Schommer, a senior pitcher for the Marauders baseball team, and his younger sister Emily, a sophomore catcher, are proving their talent on the field.

Mark shared that while the team has had some ups and downs, personally, he has been performing exceptionally well. With five appearances and no runs given up, he has also secured two saves. He expressed his love for the pressure and intensity of being a closer, highlighting the mental toughness required for the role.

Emily, on the other hand, discussed her growth from freshman to sophomore year, both mentally and physically. She credited her brother for being a role model and helping her navigate the challenges of college-level softball. The siblings often text each other after games to offer support and encouragement.

Their recent performances have been impressive, with Emily going 2 for 4 with an RBI in a game against Southwest Minnesota State, and Mark pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings and striking out five in relief to secure his first win of the season against Winona State.

The unique dynamic of having a brother-sister duo excelling in DII sports at the same college has garnered attention and admiration. Both Mark and Emily are proving that with dedication, hard work, and support from each other, they can achieve great success in their respective sports.
