School District provides diverse educational summer programs for students | News, Sports, Employment

The School District of Lee County is offering a plethora of summer learning opportunities for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. These programs aim to provide continued learning, credit recovery, promotion, targeted support, credit advancement, enrichment, and remediation.

Last summer, the district served nearly 15,000 students and offered a variety of face-to-face camps, virtual learning opportunities, credit retrieval programs, and more. This year, there will be 17 face-to-face summer programs at 33 sites, along with virtual learning options, credit recovery opportunities, and state-required programs.

High School Curriculum and Instruction Director Candace Allevato highlighted the importance of starting graduation preparation early, even as early as Pre-K. The district is introducing new programs to cater to the diverse needs of students, including advanced math camps and various enrichment programs.

For elementary school students, programs like third grade reading, ELL Science, and Scholastic Reading will be available. Middle school students can participate in STEM programs, band camp, and credit recovery options. High school students will have access to courses like algebra, biology, driver’s education, and more.

Superintendent Dr. Ken Savage emphasized the importance of allowing all students to enrich their learning experiences, not just those who need to catch up. Board member Cathleen Morgan praised the district’s efforts, calling the initiatives transformative and highlighting the shift towards a more comprehensive and engaging approach to education.
