India and Pakistan Set to Achieve Record Wheat Output Amid Favorable Weather Conditions

India and Pakistan are on track to achieve record wheat output this year, thanks to conducive weather conditions. However, India seems better prepared to handle the impact of climate change, with the development of indigenous heat-resistant and short-duration seed varieties.

India, the second-largest wheat-producing country, is projected to reach a new record of 114 million tonnes in the 2023-24 crop year. On the other hand, Pakistan, the eighth-largest producer, has set an ambitious target of 32.2 million tonnes.

One of the key reasons behind Pakistan’s reliance on wheat imports is its failure to develop climate-resilient seed varieties. While both countries have faced the adverse effects of climate change on wheat crops since 2010, the current year has been exceptionally favorable with no significant heat waves or unseasonal rains affecting the crop.

Indian agri-scientists have highlighted the importance of climate-resilient seed varieties in achieving bumper crops. With over 100 such varieties in the seed chain, India has been proactive in adopting agronomic measures to mitigate climate change impacts.

In contrast, Pakistan has been working on acquiring international collaborations to improve wheat varieties. However, the country still faces challenges in producing quality seeds that can withstand climate shocks.

As both countries navigate the challenges posed by climate change, experts emphasize the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing between Indian and Pakistani agricultural communities. By exchanging technology, expertise, and products, they aim to optimize yields and address mutual concerns in the face of changing climate patterns.
