The golf world was left in shock as world number one Scottie Scheffler was arrested while attempting to enter the Valhalla course for the second round of the PGA Championship – the second major of 2024.
In a video shared on social media, Scheffler can be seen being taken away in handcuffs by police officers. An ESPN reporter on the scene described the chaotic scene, with dozens of police cars near the entrance of the golf club.
According to reports, Scheffler was trying to gain access to the property, believing that players and coaches were allowed to enter. However, he was stopped by police officers who instructed him to halt his vehicle. When Scheffler failed to comply, a police officer attached himself to the car and eventually detained Scheffler.
The incident left the golfing world stunned, with Australia’s Min Woo Lee even tweeting #FreeScottie in support of Scheffler. In his post-round press conference, Lee expressed his belief that the police overreacted to the situation.
Other players, such as Austin Eckroat and Harris English, also shared their experiences of the unusual morning, with traffic delays and a heavy police presence causing confusion and concern among the golfers.
The arrest of the world number one golfer at a major tournament sent shockwaves through the golfing community, with many expressing sympathy for Scheffler and questioning the handling of the situation by law enforcement. The incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected events that can unfold even in the world of professional sports.
