The legal saga surrounding golfer Scottie Scheffler has come to an end as criminal charges against him have been dismissed in Louisville, Kentucky. The charges stemmed from an incident during the PGA Championship where Scheffler was arrested and handcuffed by police.
Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell requested the dismissal of the four charges against Scheffler, citing a thorough review of the evidence that led to the conclusion that the charges could not be pursued. The prosecutor stated that the evidence supported Scheffler’s claim of a “big misunderstanding” during the incident.
Scheffler was initially charged with a felony for assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, along with three misdemeanors. The arresting officer, Detective Bryan Gillis, had encountered Scheffler outside the Valhalla Golf Course while directing traffic after a pedestrian death.
Despite the dismissal of the charges, Detective Gillis has been disciplined for not activating his body-worn camera during the arrest. A surveillance video released by Louisville police showed Gillis pursuing Scheffler’s vehicle on foot and stopping him from entering the course.
Scheffler, who spent a brief time in a jail cell following the incident, returned to the course to finish the tournament tied for eighth place. His attorney, Steve Romines, declined to comment on the dismissal of the charges during the brief court hearing.
The legal resolution brings an end to a tumultuous chapter for Scheffler, allowing him to focus on his golf career moving forward.
