SDCCE Expands Lab Size and Offers Free Robotics Courses to Combat Welder Shortage

San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) is undergoing a $300,000 technology upgrade to enhance its welding program and prepare students for advancements in the trade. The upgrade includes the addition of new skill studies in coding and robotics, all offered for free to students.

The 100,000 square foot welding facility at the Educational Cultural Complex in Mountain View will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including a plasma cutter robot, a welder robot, and electrical upgrades to equipment from the 1970s. Additionally, new smart TVs and cameras for HyFlex teaching will be installed.

Brad Dorschel, Master Welder and chair of the Skilled and Technical Trades Program at SDCCE, emphasized the unique opportunity for students to learn robotic welding at no cost, a skill that will be in high demand in industrial robotic industries. The integration of robotic machinery into the certificate program is expected to provide students with a competitive edge in the workforce.

Students like Andrea Rosas and Angel Espinoza have already benefited from the welding program at SDCCE. Rosas, inspired by her uncle, a successful architect, found her passion for welding and is grateful for the free education. Espinoza, who left biotechnology studies to focus on work, has excelled in the shielded metal arc welding curriculum and aims to become a welding instructor.

With welding being one of the highest paying skilled trades in the country, SDCCE’s investment in technology upgrades will not only benefit students but also address the shortage of skilled welders in the industry. Enrollment for the summer session opens on May 13, offering prospective students the opportunity to join this innovative and high-demand program.
