The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah has announced the birth of a new elephant named “Tarthooth” at the Sharjah Safari project. This baby elephant is the second African savannah elephant to be welcomed by the project, which is the largest of its kind outside of Africa.

“Tarthooth” joins another African savanna elephant named Samra, who was born at the beginning of last year, becoming part of the project’s African elephant group. Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPAA, highlighted the organization’s efforts to preserve biodiversity and protect rare and endangered African species.

African savanna elephants are the largest land animals in the world, with their numbers declining. They have distinct features such as large ears filled with blood vessels to dispel heat, outward-curving tusks, and a height ranging from 4 to 5 meters. These elephants live in savanna regions and have a lifespan of up to 50 years.

Sharjah Safari, inaugurated in 2022 by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, has enhanced the economic, touristic, and environmental status of Sharjah. The project covers 12 different environments inspired by various regions across Africa, simulating the wildlife and terrain of the continent.

With the birth of “Tarthooth,” Sharjah Safari continues to make strides in breeding and adding various animals to its sections, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and more. The project aims to be a premier destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts, showcasing the beauty and diversity of African wildlife.
