India’s Telecom Secretary, Neeraj Mittal, urged the industry to harness the power of high-speed data for sustainable development during the World Telecom and Information Society Day event. Mittal highlighted the remarkable increase in data speeds, soaring from 13-14 Mbps to approximately 76 Mbps over the past 5-7 years.

Emphasizing the critical importance of fully utilizing 5G technology, Mittal pointed out its advantages such as low latency, reliability, and speed. He also shed light on the upcoming 6G technology, which he believes builds upon the foundation laid by 5G. “Failing to leverage these features renders the substantial investments in these technologies meaningless,” he emphasized.

The Telecom Secretary called for the integration of 5G and forthcoming 6G features in key sectors crucial for sustainability, including weather forecasting, smart city initiatives, resource management, and satellite imaging.

Mittal expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiastic response from Indian startups towards these advancements. He credited government initiatives like the Digital Communication Innovation Square (DCIS) and the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) for supporting entrepreneurs in addressing challenges across various domains using innovative technologies.

Furthermore, Mittal highlighted the establishment of 100 5G use case labs across India, providing opportunities for developing practical applications of 5G technology. He encouraged industry players to collaborate with these labs to drive further innovation in the 5G space.
