Secrets to a Long Life Revealed by 93-Year-Old Water Polo Player and Marathon Runner | Life-style News

Reading Time: 2 minutes

At 93 years old, John Starbrook, a British man affectionately known as “The Legend,” continues to inspire people of all ages with his dedication to an active lifestyle. With an impressive running history that includes completing 52 marathons, Starbrook’s commitment to fitness is unwavering. He hits the gym six days a week for a full-body workout, showcasing his determination and passion for staying healthy and fit.

But Starbrook’s athleticism extends beyond running. As a master swimmer for nearly eight decades, he developed his skills while serving in the British Army Medical Corps. To mark his 80th birthday, he accomplished a challenging one-mile swim across the Gulf of Corryvreckan, a daunting feat that separates the Scottish islands of Jura and Scarba. Even at 93, he maintains a rigorous routine, swimming three times a week and actively participating in water polo.

When asked about his secret to maintaining his fitness at such an advanced age, Starbrook shared, “I’ve never smoked and drank much. My diet’s pretty normal. I have porridge in the morning and I eat a lot of veg, and not much-fried food.” His simple yet effective approach to nutrition and exercise has undoubtedly contributed to his long and healthy life.

Dietician Kanika Narang, Deputy Manager at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, emphasized the importance of regular exercise in supporting cardiovascular health, enhancing muscle strength and flexibility, and reducing the risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, and cognitive decline. Engaging in a variety of exercises, including aerobic activities, strength training, and balance exercises, can improve both physical and mental well-being, leading to a better quality of life and an increased lifespan.

Narang recommended incorporating regular physical activity into daily routines starting from middle adulthood onwards. However, she also noted that it’s never too late to start reaping the benefits of exercise, regardless of age. While beginning more demanding routines later in life may require a gradual approach to prevent injuries, the positive effects on health and well-being can still be significant.

In terms of diet, Narang highlighted the benefits of vegetarian diets, which are typically high in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, reducing the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. She also emphasized the importance of cutting back on fried foods, as they often contain unhealthy fats that contribute to cardiovascular disease, obesity, and other chronic illnesses. By opting for healthier cooking methods like baking, grilling, or steaming instead of frying, individuals can improve their dietary quality and lower their risk of various health issues.

Additionally, Narang stressed the importance of avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption for maintaining good health and longevity. By steering clear of these harmful habits, individuals can significantly enhance their overall health, decrease the risk of premature death, and enjoy a better quality of life.

John Starbrook’s remarkable story serves as a testament to the power of dedication, healthy habits, and an active lifestyle in promoting longevity and well-being. His journey is a source of inspiration for people of all ages, reminding us that it’s never too late to prioritize our health and make positive changes for a better future.
