Reading Time: < 1 minute

Joey Batt and the Minnesota State Mavericks made history this past weekend by winning both the men’s and women’s NCAA Division II Basketball Championships in the same season. Batt, a standout guard and defensive powerhouse, led the women’s team to a 89-74 victory over Texas Woman’s University in the National Championship game.

But the Mavericks weren’t done yet. The men’s team, led by Malik Willingham, secured their own championship win with a thrilling 88-85 victory over Nova Southeastern. This double victory marked only the second time in history that a DII college has won both titles in the same season.

For Batt, a New Ulm High School legend and three-time NSIC Defensive Player of the Year, this win was the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Despite not reaching the state tournament in high school, Batt’s perseverance and skill led her to this incredible achievement.

Looking ahead, Batt plans to move to the suburbs in Minnesota to pursue a teaching job, with coaching basketball also on her radar. She hopes to share her love and passion for the game with future generations, emphasizing the valuable lessons and friendships that sports can bring.

As Batt reflects on her career and the support she’s received from coaches, teammates, and fans, she remains grateful for the journey that has led her to this momentous victory. With a legacy of success and a bright future ahead, Joey Batt’s impact on the basketball world is sure to be remembered for years to come.
