Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye’s Visit to The Gambia Strengthens Bilateral Relations

In a significant diplomatic move, newly elected Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye paid a visit to The Gambia to discuss crucial issues and strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two sister countries.

President Faye’s visit is not only a sign of respect and love for the Gambian people, President Adama Barrow, and the government but also reaffirms his government’s commitment to working closely with The Gambia. The focus of the discussions included areas such as security, defense, judiciary, education, health, trade, and the free movement of people and goods.

Of particular concern was the need to harmonize security strategies to combat any rebellion or external aggression, especially in light of the presence of well-equipped and financially strong jihadists in neighboring countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad. The two governments also discussed the importance of promoting mutual programs and information exchanges, particularly in the areas of information and communication.

Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of introducing domestic flights to enhance trade and tourism between the two countries. They also highlighted the need to address the fluctuating costs of air tickets, which have become a barrier for many travelers.

Looking ahead, both governments agreed to revive mutual conferences and enhance the effectiveness of the Sengalo-Gambia Permanent Secretariat to promote and execute bilateral cooperation. With the upcoming OIC Summit on the horizon, preparations are underway to ensure a successful gathering of 57 heads of state and kings in Banjul on 4 and 5 May.

As the two nations work towards strengthening their ties, the visit of President Faye marks a positive step towards fostering greater cooperation and collaboration between Senegal and The Gambia.
