Senior officials emphasize the ‘fresh start’ in China-North Korea relations

China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, and North Korean official Choe Ryong Hae have met in Pyongyang to discuss opening a “new chapter” in their countries’ relations. This high-level meeting comes as China and North Korea mark 75 years of diplomatic ties.

Zhao, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee, emphasized the importance of strengthening the bond between the two nations. He stated that it is China’s strategic policy to defend and develop their relationship with North Korea.

Choe echoed Zhao’s sentiments, noting that the relationship between China and North Korea has reached a new peak under the leadership of their respective countries. The two officials attended an opening ceremony for the “year of DPRK-China friendship” in Pyongyang, showcasing performances by art troupes from both nations.

The meeting between Zhao and Choe is one of the most high-level interactions between the two countries in recent years. Speculation is rife that the visit could pave the way for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s potential state visit to Beijing.

While North Korea’s relationship with South Korea has deteriorated, with Kim declaring Seoul as his country’s “principal enemy”, its ties with China remain strong. Both countries discussed the situation on the Korean peninsula, with Beijing expressing its willingness to intensify legislative exchanges and cooperation.

The meeting between Zhao and Choe highlights the enduring friendship between China and North Korea, as they strive to strengthen their alliance in the face of regional challenges.
