Montreal’s Free Public Transportation Program for Seniors Proves Successful

A costly program offering free public transportation fares to Montreal seniors is paying off, as the city reported a significant increase in transit use among people 65 and older. Since the program’s launch on July 1, 2023, the number of trips taken by seniors has surged between 15 and 20 percent, according to a recent report published by the city.

Nearly half of eligible Montreal-area residents had signed up for the program by the end of 2023, resulting in both savings and increased mobility for seniors. The initiative allows residents aged 65 and older in the Montreal agglomeration to use the métro, buses, commuter and light-rail trains for free, along with free paratransit services for those with disabilities.

The city allocated $24 million to the program in 2023 and earmarked an additional $34.3 million to continue it in 2024. Despite financial challenges faced by the city’s public transit agency, the Société de transport de Montréal, the program has been well-received by seniors.

Many older adults have praised the program for breaking isolation, providing financial relief, and increasing mobility. While some question the broad eligibility criteria, others see it as a positive step towards supporting residents in need.
