Late Night host Seth Meyers has taken aim at former President Donald Trump for his apparent flip-flopping on abortion laws, questioning his claims of being a moderate on the issue. Meyers ridiculed Trump for trying to convince voters of his moderate stance, despite his past statements and actions.
Meyers played clips of Trump from 2016, where he declared himself pro-life and promised to appoint pro-life judges, juxtaposed with a clip from 2023 where Trump seemed to take credit for overturning Roe v Wade. Trump claimed that he had given back “rights” to pro-lifers by terminating the ruling and returning the issue to the states.
The Late Night host also highlighted Trump’s recent comments on Arizona’s near-total abortion ban, which is based on a law from 158 years ago. When asked about the ban, Trump replied that it would be “straightened out” because it’s about states’ rights.
Meyers criticized Trump for his confusing stance on abortion, calling him out for trying to trick voters into thinking he’s moderate on the issue. He pointed out that Trump had promised to overturn Roe v Wade, nominated justices who did so, and then bragged about it.
The host also took aim at a radio host who called Trump the “pro-choice candidate” for leaving the issue up to the states, leading Meyers to launch a segment called “Seth Tries Really Hard Not to Lose His S***.”
In the end, Meyers emphasized that Trump’s personal opinion on abortion doesn’t matter; it’s his actions that speak volumes. He concluded that Trump will only say whatever he thinks will help him win the election and stay out of jail.
