Amari Sewell’s Journey from Iowa to Illinois: A Story of Resilience and Triumph

Amari Sewell’s path to collegiate gymnastics was not a straightforward one. Hailing from Bowie, Md., Sewell initially dabbled in football, basketball, and baseball before discovering his true passion for gymnastics. With the help of his coach and his mother’s proactive efforts to reach out to schools, Sewell found himself at the University of Iowa, where he competed for the men’s gymnastics team.

However, Sewell’s time at Iowa was cut short when the program, along with the men’s tennis and swimming and diving programs, faced elimination. Despite the disappointment, Sewell and his teammates decided to keep the sport alive in Iowa City at the club level, allowing future athletes to pursue their gymnastics careers.

It was during this challenging time that Sewell’s friend, Zac Tiderman, encouraged him to explore other opportunities in Division I gymnastics. Enter Justin Spring, the head coach of the Illinois men’s gymnastics team. Sewell’s visit to Champaign-Urbana reignited his love for the sport, and he quickly became enamored with the team’s culture and camaraderie.

Since joining the Illini, Sewell has made a significant impact both on and off the mat. He has earned All-American honors for his performances on the vault and was named a team culture captain for the upcoming season. Sewell’s vibrant personality and leadership qualities have endeared him to his teammates, with fellow gymnast Michael Fletcher praising him as a great leader and friend.

As the Illini gear up for the Big Ten team finals, Sewell’s contributions will be crucial as they aim to reclaim the conference title. And with the individual finals on the horizon, Sewell has the opportunity to add a Big Ten title to his list of accomplishments.

Through perseverance and a deep love for gymnastics, Amari Sewell has overcome adversity and found a home at Illinois, where he continues to inspire his teammates and strive for excellence both on and off the mat.
