West Virginia Football Revamps Secondary Coaching Structure

MORGANTOWN, W.Va — West Virginia football is making significant changes to its coaching staff this spring, particularly in the secondary. ShaDon Brown, the team’s defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator, has taken on a new role as the primary voice for the entire secondary unit.

Previously, the team had separate coaches for cornerbacks, safeties, and spears. However, with the departure of last year’s cornerback coach, Dontae Wright, Coach Neal Brown saw an opportunity to streamline the coaching structure. By consolidating the secondary under ShaDon Brown’s leadership, the team aims to improve communication and consistency in coaching.

ShaDon Brown, who has experience coaching the entire secondary at various Power 5 programs, believes that having one voice in the room will benefit the players. He emphasized the importance of clear communication and a unified approach to teaching the different positions within the secondary.

The transition to a single secondary coach is not without its challenges. Brown explained the distinct responsibilities and mentalities required for cornerbacks and safeties. While safeties act as the quarterbacks of the defense, making calls and adjustments, cornerbacks focus on executing plays and reacting to the ball.

Despite the complexities of coaching both positions, Brown is confident in his ability to handle the responsibilities effectively. By leveraging the support of his assistant coaches and utilizing resources efficiently, he believes the secondary unit will operate more smoothly and cohesively moving forward.
