Pakistan cricket legend Shahid Afridi has been named as a tournament ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the USA. The announcement was made by the ICC on Friday, adding Afridi to a prestigious group of ambassadors that includes Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Usain Bolt.
Afridi, known for his explosive batting and handy leg-spin bowling, has been a key figure in Pakistan’s T20 World Cup history. He played a crucial role in their journey to the final in the inaugural tournament in 2007 and their triumph in the 2009 edition.
The former Pakistan captain expressed his excitement at being a part of the upcoming T20 World Cup as a tournament ambassador, stating, “The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is an event that is very close to my heart. From being Player of the Tournament in the inaugural edition to lifting the trophy in 2009, some of my favourite career highlights have come from competing on this stage.”
ICC General Manager Claire Furlong also praised Afridi’s appointment, highlighting his impressive performances in previous T20 World Cups. Furlong stated, “Shahid competed in six ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, two of which as captain and delivering a Player of the Match performance when winning the trophy in 2009, so who better to join our all-star Ambassador team.”
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is set to kick off on 1 June, with the co-hosts USA facing Canada in the opening match at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. Fans can look forward to an exciting tournament with more teams, matches, and drama than ever before, culminating in the highly anticipated India vs Pakistan fixture on 9 June.
