The Sharon Tiger Techs Robotics Team made their mark at the First World Championship in Houston, Texas, by receiving the prestigious Innovation Project Finalist Award. Competing in the First Lego League Division against 160 other teams from around the world, Team Orange stood out for their project, Adapt-A-Reel, an adaptive fishing device designed for individuals with upper limb amputations or limited fine motor skills.
Over the past 8 months, the team worked tirelessly to improve their prototype, seeking feedback from experts such as physical and recreational therapists, the PA Fish and Boat Commission, and staff at Whole Life Services of Hermitage. They even tested their product with clients at Whole Life Services and secured a provisional patent for their innovative device.
In addition to their groundbreaking project, the team also showcased their skills in a robot table game and an alliance robot competition. They designed, built, and programmed a LEGO EV3 Robot to autonomously complete tasks on a themed playing field, competing in three matches that were each 2.5 minutes long.
To top it off, Team coach Dave Tomko was honored with the Coach of the Year Award for his exceptional leadership and inspiration to the team. The Sharon Tiger Techs, comprised of students from 4th to 8th grades in the Sharon City School District, are funded by sponsors and the school district, showcasing the power of teamwork, innovation, and dedication in the world of robotics.
