Palestinian Businessman Brings Taste of Home to Refugees in Cairo with Shawarma Restaurant

In the midst of the war in Gaza, Palestinian businessman Basem Abu Al-Awn has found a way to bring a taste of home to fellow refugees in Cairo. Displaced by the conflict, Abu Al-Awn has opened “The Restaurant of Rimal Neighbourhood,” offering Shawarma and other Palestinian and Arab dishes.

The name of the restaurant, Rimal, is a tribute to Abu Al-Awn’s neighborhood in Gaza, which was destroyed during the war. Despite the challenges he has faced, Abu Al-Awn remains determined to return to Gaza once the conflict between Israel and Hamas is over.

The restaurant has quickly gained popularity among both Palestinians and Egyptians in Cairo. Manager Ahmed Awad shared that customers have praised the unique taste of the Gaza Shawarma, which is made using spices that are scarce in Cairo. Awad’s father has played a key role in mixing the available spices to recreate the authentic Palestinian flavor.

With thousands of Palestinians seeking refuge in Cairo due to the ongoing conflict, businesses like Abu Al-Awn’s restaurant provide a sense of familiarity and comfort in a foreign land. Om Moaz, another Palestinian refugee, has also found success by offering Palestinian food through social media, catering to the demand from both Egyptians and Palestinians.

As the war continues to devastate Gaza, Abu Al-Awn and others like him remain hopeful for a resolution and a return to their homeland. Despite the challenges they face, these resilient individuals are determined to rebuild and reclaim what was lost.
