Reading Time: < 1 minute

Sherri Tynes, a legendary coach and educator, is set to make history as the only woman being inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame this year. With an impressive resume that includes being a four-time Mid-Eastern Coach of the Year and head coach of the North Carolina East/West All-Star Game, Tynes has left a lasting impact on the sports community.

Tynes’ passion for fitness and sports began at a young age, thanks to her father’s encouragement to participate in various sports throughout high school and college. After playing basketball at East Tennessee State, Tynes pursued a career in coaching, starting with college hoops at James Madison and eventually transitioning to high school coaching at Laney High School.

Over the past 30 years, Tynes has coached a variety of sports, including men’s and women’s golf, women’s basketball, and fast and slow-pitch softball. With a remarkable 423-189 record in high school coaching, Tynes has proven herself as a dedicated and successful coach.

Despite her individual accomplishments, Tynes remains humble and credits her success to the support of her assistant coaches, student athletes, and parents. She acknowledges the importance of a strong support system in achieving her coaching goals and making a positive impact on the lives of her players.

As Tynes prepares for her induction into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame on May 19, she reflects on her career with gratitude and appreciation for the opportunities she has had to inspire and mentor young athletes. Tynes’ legacy as a local legend in the sports community is a testament to her dedication, hard work, and passion for coaching.
