Local Love: Supporting Small Businesses in Colorado Springs

In the heart of Colorado Springs, a vibrant community of locally run businesses fills the streets, offering a little something for everyone in southern Colorado. From longstanding establishments like Poor Richard’s, a unique blend of restaurant and bookstore, to Heebee Jeebees Tattoos, these small businesses have become integral parts of the city’s character.

Poor Richard’s, opened in 1977 by Richard Skorman and his wife, has evolved into four different entities over the years. Skorman emphasizes the importance of supporting small businesses, noting that a significant portion of every dollar spent at these establishments stays within the community.

Heebee Jeebees Tattoos, serving southern Colorado for over 30 years, helps bring customers’ creative visions to life in ink. Tattoo artist Rick Keene values the connections he makes with customers, especially the military community, and cherishes the opportunity to work at a place that has been a part of the community for generations.

Mayor Yemi Mobolade recently signed a proclamation officially recognizing April 29 to May 3 as Small Business Week in Colorado Springs. This week serves as a reminder of the vital role small businesses play in the city’s economy and community spirit. It’s a time to show appreciation for these local treasures and support them in any way possible.

As Mobolade urges, let’s show our small business owners that they are seen and valued. Whether it’s dining at a favorite restaurant or visiting a beloved hairstylist, this week is an opportunity to support and celebrate the small businesses that make Colorado Springs unique.
