Siha Calls for an Immediate End to RSF Siege on Tuti Island in Sudan’s Capital

The Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network has called on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end the blockade of Tuti Island in Khartoum immediately. The paramilitaries tightened the siege after protests erupted over the gang-rape of a girl on the island last month.

SIHA, based in Kampala, highlighted the systematic sexual violence committed by the RSF since the start of the Sudan war on April 15, 2023. The network documented 244 cases of sexual violence, with the actual number likely much higher. The RSF’s actions include abduction, sexual slavery, and retaliatory attacks.

The recent gang-rape incident on Tuti Island led to increased protests, met with violence from the militia, resulting in a stricter siege on the island. Residents are facing restricted movement and limited access to essential resources, violating international law and human rights principles.

SIHA also pointed out patterns of sexual abuse by the RSF, including looting, kidnapping women and girls for ransom or sexual slavery, and using rape as a means of revenge or authority imposition. The network emphasized that these practices are not new and have historical roots in the region.

The ongoing suffering of the residents of Tuti Island prompted SIHA to call on African governments and the international community to address the atrocities. The network stressed that the situation on the island represents a blatant violation of international human rights laws and regulations, urging immediate action to end the siege and protect the rights of the residents.
