Silver Lake Raises Largest Fund Yet, Sets Sights on ‘Bigger Bets’

Silver Lake, a prominent technology-focused private equity group, has raised a record-breaking $20.5 billion for its seventh private equity fund, signaling a shift in focus towards larger takeovers and away from smaller bets that have not yielded favorable results in recent years.

The group’s co-chief executives, Egon Durban and Greg Mondre, explained that they have observed better performance from their largest investments, prompting them to reposition Silver Lake’s portfolio towards bigger bets. They emphasized that returns are significantly higher when investing at scale.

Silver Lake’s move comes after a period of regrettable smaller investments made during the pandemic, which the group internally dubbed as “the regret zone.” The surge in interest rates led to diminished valuations and losses in technology investments, prompting the group to refocus on larger, more strategic deals.

The group’s recent success includes selling down $20 billion in investments, such as its stake in VMware, which resulted in a substantial profit for investors. Silver Lake has averaged a 21% annual net return since 2009, bolstered by asset sales and gains on recent investments.

Investors and industry experts have praised Silver Lake’s strategic shift towards large, high-conviction bets, with JPMorgan Chase’s Mary Callahan Erdoes expressing confidence in the group’s ability to identify tech company “winners.”

Silver Lake’s track record includes successful takeovers of companies like Dell and VMware, positioning the group as a preferred investor for tech executives seeking to reposition their companies.
