Amber Simpson, a graduate transfer from Memphis, has made a significant impact on the Illinois track and field team in her first and only season with the Illini. Originally from Wales, Simpson initially wanted to pursue running but found success in throwing events after giving it a try.
Despite facing some setbacks, including battling the flu and missing the first two weeks of the outdoor season, Simpson has excelled in the hammer throw. She set Illinois and Big Ten records with throws of 230-4 and 217-6, respectively, at recent meets.
Simpson’s success has not gone unnoticed, as she has the potential to play a key role in the upcoming Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Assistant coach J.C. Lambert, who played a crucial role in recruiting Simpson, praised her talent and quick decision-making in joining the team.
Simpson’s influence extends beyond her performance on the field, as she has also provided support to her teammates, including freshman Jordan Koskondy. With plans to stay in Champaign after graduating, Simpson hopes to continue her involvement in track and field as a volunteer coach.
Overall, Simpson’s journey from Wales to Illinois showcases her determination and talent in the sport, as well as her commitment to supporting and inspiring her teammates.
