Sky Pods in Sharjah: Elevating UAE Public Transport to New Heights

The future of transportation in Sharjah has arrived with the unveiling of a 2.4km aerial track capable of transporting passengers in futuristic sky pods at speeds of up to 100kph. Developed by uSky Transport, these cutting-edge pods can carry 25 passengers at a time and are currently on display at the Karat complex in Sharjah Research, Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP).

The pods move on cables made of extremely durable material, showcasing the innovative technology behind this new mode of transport. The system was designed by Belarusian scientist Anatoli Unitsky and has been in development for three years, with the first prototype unveiled in 2021.

A public service using this urban mobility system is already operational in Belarus, and a contract has been signed to deliver a 400-meter tourist track in Karnataka, India. The developers in Sharjah are optimistic about the potential of these pods to revolutionize transportation in the region, with plans to connect key points in Dubai in the near future.

Oleg Zaretskiy, the chief executive of uScovery and uSky Transport systems, highlighted the unique advantages of their track structure, which can carry both passengers and cargo pods without the need for heavy concrete structures. This cost-effective approach sets them apart from other technologies, making them a more affordable option for sustainable transport solutions.

While other high-speed transportation technologies like the Hyperloop and maglev trains are making headlines, the uSky string rail system offers a more cost-effective alternative. With estimated costs of $20 million per kilometer, this technology presents a viable option for cities looking to upgrade their public transport systems without breaking the bank.

The company is already exploring the construction of a 20km aerial track for high-speed testing, with costs expected to exceed $230 million. By raising the uSky networks off the ground, the system spares land from the destructive development of traditional transport systems like roads or rails.

Despite recent storms in the UAE, the uSky transport system has proven its resilience, with mechanical blowers effectively removing dust from the lines and the pods performing well in high winds and heavy rain. Mr. Zaretskiy emphasized the practical experience and desire of the team to implement this technology in various locations across Dubai, connecting shopping malls, hotels, and other key destinations.

With the potential to transform public transport in the UAE, the uSky transport system represents a new era of sustainable, cost-effective transportation solutions. As the project continues to expand and evolve, residents and visitors can look forward to a more efficient and innovative way of getting around the city.
